Cleaning Agents at Home

Author: kelley , MedSchoolForParents.com Editor
Antimicrobial agents are very prevalent in the house, but the question is do these help prevent sickness or contribute to the next superbug?

  • A study looked at 2 sets of households in NYC that differed in antimicrobial products
    • Group 1: Given antimicrobial products
    • Group 2: Given same antimicrobial labelled products that didn’t truly have antimicrobial properties
  • Found no difference in infection rate
  • Conclusion: the presence of antimicrobial properties does not correlate with reduced infection rates

Top Tips from Dr. Dmytryshyn, medschoolforparents.com expert:
  1. Continue hand hygiene with plain soap and water
  2. Use tissue or hands to cover sneezes and coughs; throw away tissue and/or wash hands immediately after
  3. Do not use antimicrobial impregnated household objects
