Author: Dr. Aimee Dmytryshyn, MedSchoolForParents.com Expert
Yong children can get the “common cold” 8-12 times a year. It is spread by touching toys or contracted from other children and subsequently touching their noses and mouths.

Symptoms can last 1-2 weeks and include:

  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Poor appetite
  • Fever

Top Tips from Dr. Aimee Dmytryshyn, medschoolforparents.com Expert, to prevent and treat the common cold:

  1. Have children wash hands frequently for 15-20 seconds
  2. Receive all recommended vaccinations to prevent complications associated with colds
  3. Wash your child’s toys
  4. Do not use over the counter products for children under 6, except if Tylenol or Advil
  5. Best ways to recover are rest, fluids, and nutritious meals
  6. Be concerned if the child has increased breathing, vomiting, or blue colour to the lips
  7. Use only acetaminophen (like Tylenol) as medication
