Treating Pink Eye in a Newborn

Author: Dr. Aimee Dmytryshyn, MedSchoolForParents.com Expert

  • 1-12% of newborns contract bacterial eye infections while passing through the birth canal
  • Rates of pathogens causing infections have declined over last 2 decades, partly due to better screening
  • Usually the infections only cause a mild illness, except if it is caused by gonorrhoea
  • Gonorrhoea can occur in half of infants and can lead to blindness
  • Health agencies provide a prophylaxis ointment (silver nitrate, tetracyclic, erythromycin) to reduce risk of complications of the infection
